From the Forest to the Studio
I live surrounded by forests and lakes in Hartington, Ontario, where I never seem to run out of things to notice.
A rabbit's tracks across fresh snow. A blue mushroom I've never seen before. The sound of peepers in the spring. A shaft of light dancing through the trees. Sometimes it's a glimpse of wildlife, sometimes something so small that I might easily have walked right past it.
These quiet discoveries are where my paintings begin.
I love the process of taking something I've noticed in the real world and turning it into a carefully composed painting. Sometimes I stay close to what I've seen; other times, a real moment becomes the beginning of a story and leads me a little deeper into an imagined forest.
That is probably why I've never grown tired of painting. There is always something else to discover.
My work moves between the real and the imagined—from intimate wildlife paintings inspired by Ontario's forests to whimsical woodland stories where familiar creatures find themselves in imagined worlds.
I work primarily in watercolour, graphite pencil, and charcoal on heavy cold-pressed watercolour paper. I love the softness, texture, and quiet character these traditional materials bring to my work, and I try to leave enough room for the hand of the artist to remain visible.
I currently work in a small but very loved studio at home, surrounded by the forests of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. I spend my days painting, sketching, collecting ideas, and paying attention to whatever the woods happen to reveal.
I hope that when you spend time with one of my paintings, you find a small moment of wonder of your own—a reason to pause, look a little closer, and perhaps remember something you've almost forgotten.
